Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital became the scene of a violent clash on Friday night when Shahidul Islam, a former convener of the Dalal Bazar Degree College student wing, assaulted senior volunteer leader Jewel Hosain with a chair, punches and kicks. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on Facebook, prompted the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chatro Dal (BJCD) to expel the student leader and bar him from all party activities.
The emergency decision was formalised in a notice issued on Monday evening by the Dalal Bazar Degree College student wing’s convener Lokman Hossain and member secretary Iqram Mahmud. The notice named Shahidul Islam, also known as Sahed, as the subject of the disciplinary action, citing proven involvement in "organizationally disruptive" conduct.
According to witnesses, the dispute originated from a mobile‑phone trade argument between Shahidul and Jewel on Thursday afternoon. Jewel, who serves as senior vice‑president of the municipal Ward‑1 volunteer team, visited the hospital’s emergency department for treatment later that night. Shahidul arrived with a group of supporters and began assaulting Jewel inside the emergency ward, striking him with a chair, delivering kicks and punches that left the volunteer leader bloodied.
The video shows Shahidul repeatedly hitting Jewel while shouting, and the footage quickly went viral, drawing criticism from party officials and the public. District BJCD convener Abul Barakat, also known as Saurabh, confirmed the expulsion, stating that the evidence of Shahidul’s misconduct was clear and that the incident had tarnished the party’s image.
Attempts to contact Shahidul for comment after the incident were unsuccessful; multiple phone calls went unanswered. The party’s disciplinary action underscores its intent to curb violent behaviour among its student cadres and restore its reputation.
The expulsion serves as a warning to other members that breaches of conduct, especially those captured on social media, will result in swift punitive measures, aiming to preserve the organization’s credibility and public trust.
